Sunrise MALAWI 2007

Sunrise MALAWI 2007

A proposal from the UK-Africa Scout Fellowship

We have launched an initiative to take UK Scouts to Malawi in July/August 2007. The programme will be designed to run in parallel with the World Scout Jamboree and takes its title from the proposed Sunrise Ceremony.

There will be two teams: one North and one South which will leave the UK at different times. Each trip will last five weeks and both teams will spend about one week together in Malawi. The geographical split recognises our school holiday arrangements and will enable you to choose the dates that best suit you. The second team will leave at the time of the opening ceremony at the World Scout Jamboree; the first will return at the time of the closing ceremony.

Around 25 participants, twenty between the ages of 16 and 20, at time of the expedition and five leaders will make up each team.

Cost for the expedition is still to be confirmed but should be around £1500 to £2000 per person. This amount will also cover the cost of work undertaken in Malawi. We will attempt to raise funds centrally and will make use of any grants made available to us. As an individual you will be expected to fund raise on your own as well as with the group. Your fund raising efforts demonstrate your commitment to the expedition and your support for your fellow team members.

One major aspect of the expedition will be the Sunrise Ceremony. The second team will have arrived from the Jamboree with a message from World Scouting, the first team will return to the Jamboree with a message from Malawi.

If you believe Sunrise Malawi 2007 is the sort of project you would like to be involved in please return an expression of interest (see below). This does not commit you to participation but will ensure you receive any relevant information.

This will be a tough expedition. Malawi is amongst Africa's poorest countries. In recent memory it has suffered drought, famine and political suppression. Things are improving but you should not expect a simple laid back five weeks. There will be times when you will have to make do with that which is available and water will be scarce. You will be expected to respect and live within the restrictions of Malawi life.

Mobile phones, MP3 players and other gadgetry will not be permitted at our training weekends or on the expedition. There will be no alcohol at training weekends or on the expedition.
