1st August 2007 - 100th Birthday for the Scouts

Leeds & Wakefield Scouts join 28 million Scouts around the world to promise peace and tolerance on Scouting’s 100th birthday

 

·1st August sees a BIG BIRTHDAY BASH at Nostell Priory, Wakefield and other events throughout the Leeds area.

 

On the 1st August, scouts from the Leeds & Wakefield area will join 28 million Scouts from around the world will join together in the largest ever worldwide display of peace, tolerance and harmony to celebrate 100 years since Scouting started.

 

This special day will see 400,000 Scouts up and down the UK participating in hundreds of similar “Scouting’s Sunrise” events. Scouts from Leeds will take to the city’s train station to handout birthday cake to passing commuters and release balloons from Headingley.  Scouts in Wakefield are holding a big birthday bash at Nostell Priory.

 

Brownsea Island will be the global focal point for the centenary celebrations when at 08.00 BST two young people from over 160 countries will unite at a ‘Sunrise Ceremony’ to lead the 28 million Scouts across the world in re-affirming their promise to build a tolerant and peaceful society.

 

As part of the celebrations, a selection of Scouts from Leeds & Wakefield will join 40,000 young people from around the world, to gather at Hylands Park in Essex, site of the V Festival, to take part in the largest ever World Scout Jamboree.

 

County Commissioner for Leeds & Wakefield, Ian Chappell said, “If Baden Powell knew just how successful the Movement he founded all those years ago had become in being a promoter of global peace, he would be delighted. Only Scouting can bring together so many young people from such different backgrounds together.’”
