REGION GATHERING IN NORTHUMBERLAND

Why Humshaugh?
Many people in Scouting believe that the first scout camp took place at Brownsea Island in 1907, but this is not the case! The Brownsea Island camp was an experimental camp comprised of boys from the Boys Brigade and sons of friends of BP. Following this experiment, BP formed The Scouts, and the following year 1908, the first Scout Camp took place at Humshaugh near Hexham.
Sunday 22nd October 2006
To celebrate 30 years of Fellowship the region arranged a walk to the site of the Humshagh camp. We met at the George Hotel at Chollerford, where BP had stayed, before walking to the site of the camp, where we renewed our promises at the cairn. There were 40 people taking part including the Lady Mayor and Mayoress from Blyth, and a contingent of 10 from Central Yorkshire. The weather stayed fine and a good day was enjoyed by all who attended - our thanks to Northumberland fellowship members who stewarded the event so efficiently.
