The Six Dales Walk - It's what your boots were made for!

A challenge for teams (min. 4, max. 7) supported by a group belonging either to The Scout Association or Girlguiding, it traverses 42 miles of Yorkshire's most beautiful countryside.

From Ribblesdale to the Vale of York, the route follows well defined tracks, footpaths and wild open moors, before the gentler stretch of the course to the east.

The event encourages team spirit, combining safe fell walking procedures with competition, and the comradeship of a team activity.

Prior practice along the route is recommended, providing an ideal opportunity for Leaders to train their Scouts and Guides in map reading and fell walking skills. It can count towards Scout Hikes Away and Challenge Awards.

Completion of the full 42 miles may be beyond the ability of most competitors, but they will still find satisfaction in achieving as much as they can.

The event is well-organised, with full radio backed safety arrangements. There are refreshments at checkpoints. Onward transport provided for retired competitors and kit. There are badges and certificates awarded to entrants.  The Senior trophies are presented in the evening at West Tanfield.

The Six Dales Junior Walk

This follows the same route, finishing after 23 miles at Lofthouse.

It is intended for teams of young people of 14 years of age and younger, either with or without an adult.

Junior team trophies, as well as a trophy for the youngest walker to reach there, are presented at Lofthouse.
