Challenge 20+1 – Update

Date: 28th Oct 2020 Author: Cathryn Atkinson

When we postponed Challenge20 to 2021, we were all hopeful that the world would be much closer to returning to some level of normality. Sadly this has not been the case to date. The Challenge20+1 Management team have been considering how this might affect our proposed 2021 event.

During any Scouting event, the safety of our young people and adults is always at the forefront of our minds. We also know that you, our volunteers and young people in Central Yorkshire, have come to know Challenge events as the incredible festivals of fun, challenge and adventure that they have become.

Unfortunately, it is becoming more and more clear that we will not be in a position to make a certain “go” decision for Challenge20+1 with sufficient time left to deliver the scale and quality of event that Challenge events have become known for. This, coupled with the financial risk of going ahead with an event with such a sizeable budget without knowing that we can rely on our usual amazing attendance levels due to COVID-19, has led us to have to make the incredibly difficult decision to cancel Challenge20+1.

However, all is not lost. We are committed to providing some incredible opportunities for sections to get together in a safe manner on a smaller scale (COVID-19 permitting) in the Summer of 2021 to enjoy a range of exciting activities. Keep an eye on our Central Yorkshire e-newsletter, website and social media for further information as we progress with these.

We will now move back to our original three-year cycle of Challenge events which will see our next event fall in 2023. We’ll be looking for people to get involved with our planning teams for the 2023 event as we move further into 2021 and we would love for you to be involved! Keep an eye out for further details as we move towards the Summer.

What does this mean for me and/or my section?
If you have already paid a £50 deposit to reserve a space for your section or Group at the 2021 event (these were carried over from the 2020 event), or if you have made a £10 payment to join the event as a staff member, we will contact you directly over the next few weeks to arrange a refund. Please do give us some time to do this, as there are quite a number of refunds to be made. If you have not heard from us by the end of November, please get in touch with Cathryn at the County Office by sending an e-mail to Please note that we cannot carry over any deposits or staff booking payments to the 2023 event.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the Challenge20 Management team, sub teams and every volunteer who has supported the planning and preparation for what was Challenge20 and then became Challenge20+1. They have all put a tremendous amount of effort and time over the past two years into what would have been an absolutely incredible event!

Keep an eye out for further information about our alternative summer events which will be released as it becomes available!

Put your phone down and what are you left with? Just teamwork, courage and the skills to succeed.’
