Get Involved With Virtual Challenge20!

Date: 10th Jun 2020 Author: Cathryn Atkinson

We can’t wait for Virtual Challenge20 to come around!

The 8th – 9th August 2020 will see our Scouting community in Central Yorkshire come together online for an incredible virtual camp.  With a huge range of activities and entertainment, plus the opportunity to camp in your own homemade den, this isn’t one to miss out on!

What’s even better is that we want YOU to get involved!  This is your opportunity to contribute to the event by creating some little videos for us to use during the event or by helping us with some video editing. Have a look below at the different categories we are looking for. In all cases we welcome videos both from young people and adult volunteers.

1.  Help us to show the scale of Scouting in Central Yorkshire by joining in our opening ceremony!
As part of our opening ceremony, we’d love to have a representative from each Group in the County helping us to welcome our young people to the event.  Here’s what we’re looking for for this one:

A short clip (less than 5 seconds) featuring one young person or adult from your group.

An assistant (not featured in the shot) should throw a necker to the person in the shot – with the Necker coming into the persons right hand and leaving the shot via the left hand (this means it appears on screen as left to right).   The person in the shot should say “Hello from [YOUR GROUP NAME],” before throwing the necker out of shot (to the other side of the camera from which it was thrown in). Please record video footage in landscape format.

2.  Some den-building examples
As part of the event we are going to be inviting young people to create their own “den” (either indoors or outdoors) to sleep in overnight. We’d love some examples of how to build a den or even just some photos of something you’ve built that might inspire our young people in their own creations. Videos should be shorter than 2 minutes please. Please record video footage in landscape format.

3. Be part of our virtual campfire!
We want to feature your favourite campfire songs, and we’d love it if you could help us to lead them.  To help us to lead a song at our virtual campfire, submit a video of you leading that song to camera.  No need to have your own campfire in the background – we’ll take care of that – all we need from you is the song and your enthusiasm!  Songs should be appropriate for all ages and video clips less than 2 minutes please. Please record video footage in landscape format.

4. Enter our talent show
Just like we had planned for the actual Challenge20 event, had we been able to go ahead, we will be featuring Central Yorkshire’s best talent in our talent show on Saturday 11th July. To enter the talent show, record a video of less than 1 minute’s duration featuring your entry. Should we receive a large number of entries, we will select a smaller number of entries to feature in the show final during the event. Please record video footage in landscape format.

5. Be part of our promise renewal
As part of our closing ceremony, we will be renewing our Scout promises together. To help us with this, please submit a video of you saying your Beaver/Cub/Scout promise (please feel free to use whichever version of the promise you would normally say). Please record video footage in landscape format. Videos should be less that 1 minute in duration.

How to submit your video
To submit your video, upload your video file to our submission form here. Should you want to submit videos for more than one category, please complete the form multiple times – once for each video file you would like to upload.  Videos must be submitted no later than 5pm on Monday 6th July 2020.

Videos can be submitted from computers and mobile devices. You will need an e-mail account that is registered with Google (which many will have already) to submit your video.  Instructions to assist you with registering your e-mail account with Google can be found here.  If you are having trouble uploading your video or accessing the form, please e-mail
vicky.sanderson@cycscouts.org.uk and we will arrange another method to collect your video.

Are you a budding video editor?
We’re looking for people who might be able to support us in making this event incredible! If you have experience editing video footage in PowerDirector (or a similar software package) we would love to hear from you. Send a short clip of something that you have edited before to Vicky, our County Media Manager, at Vicky.sanderson@cycscouts.org.uk to get involved

Put your phone down and what are you left with? Just teamwork, courage and the skills to succeed.’
